I am sure that you have heard that on 26 December 2004 a devastating tsunami tidal wave hit Aceh Province, that located at the northern tip of Sumatra. It was a terrible nature disaster that caused a lot of damage and took thousands of life along the coast of Aceh Province. The tidal wave also hit West Coast of Malaysia Peninsula, southern Thailand, East Coast of India, East Coast of Ceylon and Maldives.
In Medan (the capital of North Sumatra Province), we also felt the tremor for approximately 5 minutes on that Sunday morning. Immediately we checked all the tourists' spots in the North Sumatra Province, and also West Sumatra Province, and we found that there are no damaged occurred. at Lake Toba, Berastagi, Medan or Bohorok.
We would like to assure you that it is totally safe to travel to those places we mentioned.
Except on Nias Island, located on the Indian Ocean (part of the North Sumatra Province), that were also hit by the tsunami tidal wave on that Sunday morning. Therefore the visit to this Island is not recommended until further notice. Until we have detailed information how bad is the damage on that island.
